Carnival in Uruguay is the longest of the world, with more than 40 days of celebration. It begins in the end of January and ends in mid March. Homes and streets are decorated, humorous shows are staged at open-air theaters. There are many competitions for murgas, black societies and lubolos, humorists, parodistas and magazines.
Groups formed by drummers playing the tamboril, perform candombe rhythmic figures and the men and women of the themed party, parade through the street.
Murgas (one of the most popular groups of Carnival) perform a kind of popular opera at the tablados, singing and dancing songs that usually talk about the problems in the country. Generally they make jokes about the president, futbol, or past times of Uruguayans.
